XC World Cup #2 - Offenburg, Germany

May 9, 2008

The superbly organized German World Cup saw some spectacular racing on a great course. The huge crowd helped to make it one of the best world cup races ever. Most of the track was in the forest on singletrack, and some man made jumps and drops made it quite technical. It was not a very selective course and with little passing zones it was key to have a good start. This was what I was a bit worried about since I had to start out of 45th position.

Luckily I had good legs right from the gun and moved up quickly. 30 minutes into the race I was in 16th place, only 15 seconds behind the lead group, that had stayed together until then. Just like the weekend before, things went almost too smoothly until my saddle came out of adjustment. I lost a minute to get it fixed and continued on in 30th place. Together with my teammate Tschüge Graf I moved up consistently to finish in 17th place (Graf finished in 18th).

Because of the fast track, the pack stayed closed together. One minute faster would have moved me into the top ten. But my result was secondary anyway, because Florian and Nino were rocking for the Swisspower Team. After the bad luck Florian had the week before, he jumped on the podium in third. And Nino placed again in the top 5, finishing 4th. Behind the winner Absalon, the Swiss had three riders in top four since Sauser came in 2nd . These three riders are the first to meet the Olympic qualification limit, which does not mean they are qualified yet. There are still 5 selection races to come. For Swisspower it was the most successful World Cup so far.

We were only a few points behind Orbea in the team ranking. Second best Mountain Bike team in the world right now!

And hungry for more at the next world cup in Madrid this Sunday.

Stay tuned
