Cunego's Big Week Isn't Over Yet
April 24, 2008
A win at the Amstel Gold and 3rd at La Flèche Wallonne puts Cunego in the UCI Pro Tour leader's jersey, solidifies status as a major threat in one day classics.
In his first time lining up for the Amstel Gold race, Damiano Cunego outsprinted many strong rivals including Frank Schleck, Davide Rebellin and Alejandro Valverde to the top of the Cauberg in the Valkenburg region of the Netherlands. Three days later, Cunego finished third - behind only Kim Kirchen and Cadel Evans - in La Flèche Wallonne, held for the 72nd time in the French speaking region of Belgium. This bodes well for this Sunday's fabled Liège-Bastogne-Liège, considered one of the sport's 5 most important one day classics, and one which suits Cunego's explosive climbing and sprinting prowess.
While Cunego has often factored in the spring classics, he had never won one before Sunday's Amstel Gold. His reputation as a classics threat was first established when he won the Giro di Lombardia in 2004, the same year he won the Giro d'Italia as a precocious 22 year old upstart. He won Lombardia again last year, ending Paolo Bettini's two year reign as champion of La Classica delle foglie morte (Classic of the falling leaves). The win at Amstel Gold also put him into the white UCI points leader's jersey.
