In another highly-anticipated sprint finale on stage 9, this time it was Lampre-Fondital's Danilo Napolitano who bested all the other big names and took the honors. In the last 75 meters, Napolitano was just able to kick hard enough to pass McEwen, hungry for a win after a few days of suffering in the gruppetto, and Petacchi, eager to win in front of his home town crowd. The finish was so tight it almost required a photo to settle it, but the dejection on the faces of McEwen and Petacchi, and the celebratory fist-pump from Napolitano left no doubt in anyone's mind who the fastest man was today. Once again Bettini was close but didn't have the jam to take it all the way to the line. Hushovd made the best of a solid lead-out but was unable to hold off his other rivals.
