Team TIBCO Tears It Up

March 19, 2007

Los Altos, California (March 13, 2007)--Team TIBCO has started off the season by tearing up the road with outstanding race performances. Last weekend marked the "official" kick-off of the cycling season, with the first two races on the National Racing Calendar (NRC); the Merco Credit Grand Prix and the Merco Credit Road Race. Team TIBCO won both events, and is now leading the national rankings.

Leading the charge is Team Captain, Brooke Miller. Deemed "Sprinter Extraordinaire" by the press in early February, Brooke has lived up to her reputation. Brooke has won all five races she has entered since the season began. In addition to the Merco races last weekend, Brooke won the Bay Front Criterium (2/10), Cherry Pie Criterium (2/11), and Santa Clarita Criterium (2/24). She has also placed second in the Central Valley Classic Road Race (3/9) and fourth in the Central Valley Classic Criterium (3/11). Each top placing has been characterized by her amazing sprint finish.

Team TIBCO has also posted success with a win in the Women's Cat 3 Merco Credit Grand Prix (3/3) by Alexis Alexander and a third place finish in the Snelling Road Race (2/24) by Katie Lamden.

Here's how the races unfolded in Brooke's words:

Bay Front Criterium (2/10)-"Kelly McDonald from Touchstone got onto the front and kept it strung out until 3 laps to go. At that point, Stacy moved up and was sitting on her wheel and I moved in and took Stacy's wheel. Stacy is great at just GOING! She held the pace for two laps. As we hit the 200M mark, Stacy was out of the saddle and I was on her sheel. I jumped hard and didn't look back. I took the sprint on the heels of a GREAT lead-out! Stacy sat up after her lead out and finished 9th, Flavia sprinted in for 10th, and Bri (after some earlier race difficulties), finished 13th in the field sprint.

Cherry Pie Criterium (2/11)--The finish was an uphill sprint into a bit of a head wind. I was anticipating a hard sprint and figured that I would have to work hard for it. As we hit about 500m, the pace slowed. With roughly 400m out, I decided to go. I made a strategic decision as I had been successful in my jumps earlier in the race. The 595 quickness is impressive, giving me an advantage as I made my move. I had confidence that I could hold that speed. It worked. Kelly Benjamin was on my wheel, but Tina was behind her. So, Tina had to try and jump around both of us. I caught her off-guard. I turned back and saw that she was closing on me, but that she did not have enough time. I was able to hold her off by a good wheel length.

Santa Clarita Grand Prix (2/24)--Stacy saw me up there and moved up to try and lead me out, but I was on the other side and could not get to her. Laura Charameda moved up in front of me and was pirating the other lead outs since she was a solo rider. I moved in behind her and figured that I would just follow the action from where I was. Going into the bottom corner, I was sitting about 4th or 5th wheel and waited a bit for the other sprinters to jump. They went and then so did I. I felt good on my sprint and was able to jump around several riders taking the win. Better yet, Stacy still managed to pull 6th in the sprint! Kelly Benjamin (Cheerwine) was right on my wheel and finished second.

NRC Merco Credit Union Grand Prix (3/3)--The lead outs swung wide to the right and up the road, I could see T-Mobile starting to peel off from their fast lead out. I jumped hard on the left and started to move up. I had no other options. I sprinted from way back and was just focused on getting up the road. I could see that I was closing, but did not know if I had enough room. I just dug deep and tried to pull out all the power I could muster. In the end, I nipped T-Mobile's Suzanne de Goede at the line.

NRC Merco Credit Union Road Race (3/4)-- Jane Despas (Klein realty) launched a strong attack before the 5 km to go mark. She quickly got up to a 27 second lead before any of the teams started to react. With 5 K to go, the race picked up again as the big teams moved up front and started to attack. Aarons launched Katherine Carroll and drew out a chase by Webcor's Christine Thorburn, who ended up driving the pace over the last hill towards the finish. Despas was quickly brought back. Up ahead, I could see an Aaron's rider and the bright yellow of Lipton, but I was focused on using wheels to move up. I tried to get behind Colavita's Mackinzie Dickie, hoping to get her to lead me out with her own great sprint. Time was running out and I had to go. I jumped around 300m and looked ahead to the line. I saw Sara Caravalla to my right and the line in front of me. I was able to dig a little bit deeper. This time, I knew that I had won, but only by inches.

Central Valley Classis Road Race (3/9 ) We had expected the course to be hard and to end in a break. We decided that our team would be aggressive. Our plan was to set up one of our riders, into the winning break and as a backup plan, I would try and hang for the bunch sprint A break was launched. Stacy was doing a great job of sitting on and putting herself in great position. Stacy, Kristin Lasasso (Lipton) and Mara Abbot (Webcor) were sitting on while Alison Powers (Colativa) and Kim Anderson (T-Mobile) worked hard to keep the break going. When Webcor got the break to within 20 seconds, they moved off the front. Now the pack was hungry. Colavita moved hard to bring their ace sprinter, Tina Pic, up to the line. The angry peloton move forward aggressively and caught Stacy's break with only 1 km to go. Unfortunately for Team TIBCO, Stacy was taken down in a crash. There was a flurry of chaos as the crash happened. I noticed the sprinter trains were starting to wind up and I was in great position behind Tina. Marisa had moved up and was trying to lead me out. When I got shuffled, she moved in front of me and was doing a great job of bringing me up to the front. Then, I lost Tina's wheel. Not knowing where she was, I thought, "Don't hesitate, just go!" I moved into a good position and jumped for the line at about 200-250m. I was closing in on the riders in front of me and thinking that I had it. Just then veteran, Tina Pic, jumped around me with about 50m to the line. I had given her the picture perfect leadout. I pulled second and she took the crown.

Central Valley Classis Road Race (3/9 ) Today was a HARD race! The course was a downtown crit with a 180* flagpole. We had a feeling that it would be a hot race. it was! There were a number of teams that were motivated for a win and had nothing to lose by making the entire peloton suffer. Aaron's in particular was out to make it a hard day for everyone. The 180* turn really broke up the rhythm of the race- riders would sprint into it, hit their breaks, come to a near standstill; then sprint out of it. It was difficult to hold position. With three laps to go, Stacy attacked hard and forced the field to chase. At the time, I was in great position and delighted to see Stacy take a flier. We would have been ecstatic to have her sail in solo, but the pack caught her. The final two laps were aggressive and dangerous, with riders hitting corners hard and a lot of physical bumping. I lost Tina's wheel and was not able to regain it. I had planned on hitting the final corner at 2nd or 3rd wheel, but found myself buried in the peloton- probably sitting about 8th or 9th. I sprinted hard from the corner, but was over-geared and suffering from my bad position. I was able to move up enough to finish 4th, but missed that coveted podium spot."

Team TIBCO plans to compete in the California NRC Race Series with races including Redlands Bicycle Classic (March 22-25), followed by Sea Otter (April 14). For the complete 2007 racing calendar, please refer to www.teamtibco.com.

Brooke credits her victories to the support of her teammates and the team's high performance equipment. Brooks says, "My equipment is top of the line and has made the difference now in two of my sprint finishes. Because the Look 595 is stiff and responsive, the bike jumps forward and helps me nip riders on the line. The SRAM Force is incredibly responsive, light and intuitive. In races, it shifts so cleanly and easily that I can focus on racing and never give a second thought to shifting."
