Rory Sutherland Wins 26th Annual SRAM Tour of the Gila, Highlighting Another Outstanding Week of Racing for the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team

Silver City, New Mexico – Rory Sutherland (AUS) capped an outstanding week of racing in the desert southwest for the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team, taking the overall win at the 26th Annual SRAM Tour of the Gila. Sutherland started off the Tour of the Gila with a victory in Stage 1 and he and his Teammates never relinquished the lead. Earning multiple podiums and top 10 finishes throughout the grueling race Team UnitedHealthcare protected the leader’s jersey from beginning to end. Competitive Cyclist’s Chad Beyer and Bontrager-Livestrong’s Joe Dombrowski rounded out the top three in the General Classification, finishing second and third, respectively.

Sutherland talked about his win in New Mexico, stating, “This was not easy, it was tough. The boys did a great job getting us to this point and sometimes you have to put it on your shoulders and bring it home. When your Teammates ride so hard for you, you don’t have a choice. You have to pay them back for what they’ve done and show them how much their effort means. We are heading in the direction we want and are seeing the hard work of the past few months start to pay off.”

Sutherland added, “The other teams were great, especially Competitive Cyclist and Bontrager-Livestrong. Simply a tremendous effort from everyone racing here at SRAM Tour of the Gila.”
General Manager and Team Director, Mike Tamayo, said, “The SRAM Tour of the Gila is a great stage race and its good for us to get a stage race win on US soil. It’s important for our title sponsor, UnitedHealthcare, and for all of our sponsors. Winning the overall at Gila and watching the boys race up the Gila monster reassured us that the Team has done all the right things this spring.”
Tamayo continued, “Today the Team did exactly what it needed to do. Jonny (Clarke), Davide (Frattini), Ben (Day) and Chris (Jones) rode the front of the race like superstars. Jeff and Jason were in the breakaway and once the breakaway made it over the biggest climb, those two guys were in a select group that Rory, Marc (de Maar), Competitive Cyclist’s Paco Mancebo, and all the top riders where in.

Jeff and Jason rode their butts off, closing the gap from five minutes to three minutes. Then, the last 10km it was Rory solo with the top riders sitting on his wheel. He slowly chipped away at the gap and won the overall by just 15 seconds.”

Reflecting on the Tour, Tamayo concluded, “We’re proud of our effort here. Also, it was impressive to watch the Bontrager-Livestrong Development Team ride so well and impress everyone, especially going 1-2 on the final stage today. They are proving a lot and they deserve to be at the Amgen Tour of California.”

The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Roster for the 26th Annual SRAM Tour of the Gila:
Rory Sutherland (AUS)
Marc de Maar (CUR)
Jeff Louder (USA)
Jason McCartney (USA)
Chris Jones (USA)
Jonny Clarke (AUS)
Ben Day (AUS)
Davide Frattini (ITA)

Ritchey Sponsored, Nino Schurter Wins Bike Days

At the Swiss Bike Days in Solothurn- Nino Schurter scores his 4th victory in his 6th race this season. The SCOTT juniors take 2nd and 3rd behind world champion Koretzky.

The 2012 Bike Days set a new record with 23'000 visitors. Highlight of the weekend was the cross-country with international top competition. Besides the Swiss elite Jose Antonio Hermida- Moritz Milatz and Maxime Marotte and many others were at the line.

The SCOTT duo Vogel/Schurter set the pace right from the start. With different success. While Schurter stayed in top positions all race long- Vogel got dropped by the 7 men lead group after he bent his seat. Following he cruised into casual 36th place.

The trio Schurter- German champion Milatz and marathon world champion Sauser got in a break and left Näf-Hermida-Flückiger and Marotte behind.

In The very last climb Nino attacked to repeat his victory from 2011, followed by Milatz only 3 seconds down.

"It's cool to win here in front of a huge home crowd. With some long stretches of paved roads the race here always gets tactical. Therefore you always have to keep the race under control. After Florian lost contact I was on my own, but at the end it worked out perfectly. I'm confident and ready for the coming up world cups."

With an 11th place Marcel Wildhaber missed the top ten not to far. U23 rider Roger Walder placed 26th in the same race.

With the current junior world champion and US rider Keegan Swenson who was 3rd at the world cup in Houffalize, the juniors had good competiotion. Dominic, Andri and Victor Koretzky were soon in a three men break to battle it out for victory. Our SCOTT juniors made it a bit too easy for the world champion. First Andri had an issue with his pedal that made him stop at the pit zone. On last lap Dominic got a flat tire that took the chance away for victory. Andri showed a strong comeback. Beeing 2 minutes down to the leaders he came back from 8th to 3rd place all in last lap. At the end he was only 48 seconds behind the winner.

They have a chance for revenge the next coming weekends at the world cups in Nove Mesto (CZE) and La Bresse (FRA).
Same for Florian Vogel who will fight against Sauser-Näf-Flückiger-Gyger and Gs Olympic spot in London

BMC Racing Cup Solothurn
Elite:
1.
Reinhardt Janse Van Rensburg (Team MTN-Qhebeka) Wins the Tour de Bretagne

In an incredible display of committed and dedicated team riding from Team MTN-Qhubeka, Reinardt Janse van Rensburg turned a 13s deficit at the start of today’s final stage over 166km’s from Langonnet to Dinan into victory.

Janse van Rensburg had enough in reserve to launch out of the bunch in the final 2km’s of the stage to cross the finish line in 2nd place and put 7s into the yellow jersey wearer Eric Berthou (Bretagne-Schuller). The 2nd place time bonus at the stage finish of 6s meant that Janse van Rensburg and Berthou were tied on time for the overall victory. Only after a count back to the riders stage placing’s was the race awarded to Janse van Rensburg.

“In the team meeting we discussed that none of our riders will go in the early break away and we will wait until the final 6 circuits in the last 30km’s of the stage, “ said team manager Jens Zemke, “Then the team will go full speed to get rid of the yellow jersey’s team mates so that he is alone and then Reinardt will attack close to the finish to get maximum time. All was working perfectly when 10 riders went clear but Bretagne-Schuller could not bring it back so we put Calvin Beneke and Bradley Potgieter on the front to help them. When the circuits started Martin Wesemann and Dennis van Niekerk went as fast as they could which split the bunch. Reinardt went in the final 2km’s and it was just enough, unbelievable.”

Stage 7 Results Langonnet – Dinan 166km:
1st Dimitri Le Boulch (Auber 93) 3h56’35”
2nd Reinardt Janse van Rensburg (Team MTN-Qhubeka) @21”
3rd Scott Thwaites (Endura Racing) @28”

Final General Classification Tour de Bretagne:
1st Reinardt Janse van Rensburg (Team MTN-Qhubeka) 26h54’38”
2nd Eric Berthou (Bretagne-Schuller)
3rd Daan Olivier (Rabobank) @22”

Overall Points Competition:
1st Eric Berthou (Bretagne-Schuller) 98pts
2nd Reinardt Janse van Rensburg (Team MTN-Qhubeka) 95pts
3rd Erick Rowsell (Endura Racing) 74pts

A magnificent 3rd place on the 127km stage from Lambarene to Ndjole by Meron Russom (Team MTN-Qhubeka) puts him in the yellow jersey by just 7 seconds. Rusom finished stage2 1 second behind Nikita Umerbekov (Astana) and Thomas Voeckler (Europcar) who placed 4th in the recent World Tour Classic Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

It was a great day for Team MTN-Qhubeka, Tesfay Habtemariam was the first to attack after 6km’s but the peloton ensured he never gained much time. At 32km’s the first hot spot sprint was won by race leader Yohan Gene (Europcar) gaining a 3s time bonus with Jani Tewelde (MTN-Qhubeka) in 2nd and Adil Jelloul (Morocco) in 3rd.

A group of ten riders managed to get clear after 47km’s, the first hour of racing was done at an average speed of 46.5km/h. The group included Springer (Specialized), Frekalsi (Eritrea), Klimankou (Astana), Ben Youcef (GSP), Habiyambere (Rwanda), Janse Van Rensburg (MTN-Qhubeka), Claude (Europcar), Akkouche (Tunisia), Moukagni (Gabon), Teka (Cameroon). They were soon brought back by and then it was the turn of Abdelbasat Hanachi (Algeria) who went out alone. Hanachi took the 2nd hot spot sprint with Soufiane Haddi (Morocco) 2nd and Tewelde (MTN-Qhubeka) 3rd.

The race heated up over the top of the second last climb as 2010 and 2011 winner Anthony Charteau (Europcar) went on the attack followed Jumabekov (Astana). They were immediately closed down by Moroccan rider Adil Jelloul. Voeckler then attacked followed by Janse van Rensburg who could not hold onto the Frenchman’s pace up the final climb. Only the Kazakhstan rider of Astana Nikita Umerberkov could come past Voeckler on the line closely followed by Russom.

Stage Result Lambaréné-Ndjolé 128,6km
1.
Joaquim Rodriguez triumphs in Fleche-Wallone, the second of the "Ardennes Classics"

After two consecutive second place finishes in 2010 and 2011, 'Purito' finally had no rivals in the final uphill, Mur de Huy, a climb with several sections steeper than 15%.

The Katusha Team was active during the entire race, a difficult job because of the wet and windy conditions:

During the early miles, the Russian Team kept a a two-man escape that reached a highest gap of 7’ over the main group under control and in check. After that, the team neutralized several attacks from some dangerous rivals. For instance Andy Schleck (Radioshack-Nissan) tried his luck with 40 kilometers to go: but he was followed by Yuriy Trofimov, and his blitz was over a few kilometers later. With 9 kilometers to go, right after Cote de Villers-le-Bouillet, Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Barracuda) and Petter Nordhaug (Sky) left the group: the duo kept around 10’’ over the chasing group until the beginning of Mur de Huy, where their action was again neutralized by the work of Katusha, still with four riders ahead. And in the final climb Rodriguez managed to make the difference, as he always does when the road gets steep: his pace had no rivals, and the Spanish rider took a cozy solo win ahead of Michael Albasini (GreenEdge) and the last year’s winner Philippe Gilbert (BMC), both 4’’ far from the leader of Katusha Team.

Thanks to this performance, Katusha Team is now second in UCI World Tour Team Rankings behind Omega Pharma-Quick Step, with 502 points; while Rodriguez is third in UCI World Tour Individual Rankings, with 222 points.

“It’s the best and most incredible victory of my whole career – said ‘Purito’ – today is definitely one of the best days of my life. I’ve always been in love with these Classic races, and a victory in these competitions has always been one of my main goals: finally, after many good results, I managed to win. Obviously I have to thank my teammates: all of them did a great job from the beginning to the end. It’s true that Mur de Huy was a more suitable final part to my characteristics than Cauberg, but I have to admit it was really hard: it looked like an easy victory, but I did a strong effort in order to defeat my rivals. Now I can get ready for ‘Liege-Bastogne-Liege’ with high motivations: I don’t think this victory will change anything, I’m not the only forerunner, there are many strong riders with chances to win. Everything changed from ‘Amstel Gold Race’ to ‘Fleche Wallonne’: everything can change on Sunday too. So we have to pay a lot of attention and work at our best if we want to take this legendary double”.

Saturday, April 14, 2012

UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team’s Hilton Clarke and Jake Keough Take 1st and 3rd Place in the 9th Annual Presbyterian Hospital Invitational Criterium

Charlotte, North Carolina – The UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team’s Hilton Clarke (AUS) and Jake Keough (USA) captured 1st and 3rd place respectively in the 9th Annual Presbyterian Hospital Invitational Criterium, Saturday night, April 14, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Team Jamis Sutter Home’s Alejandro Borrajo (ARG) split the two Team UnitedHealthcare sprinters to finish second. Clarke’s win was his second of the season and the victory allows him to remain atop the National Criterium Calendar’s (NCC) individual standings. The Team is also in first place in the USA Cycling Team standings.

Clarke secured the Team’s first win of the season two weeks ago on March 31 in Tampa at the 2012 Cigar City Brewing Criterium & Street Festival, beating Luis Amaran (Jamis Sutter Home) and Amaran’s teammate, Kyle Wamsley, who took third in the first race of the NCC. Wamsley put forth yet another valiant effort in Charlotte, but the five man squad from UnitedHealthcare consisting of Clarke, Adrian Hegyvary (USA), Jay Thomson (RSA), Karl Menzies (AUS), and last year’s Presbyterian Crit winner, Jake Keough (USA), proved to be too much for the field. The boys in blue and white put forth a mammoth effort in the final laps to reel in the leaders and their well-executed lead out paved the way for Clarke and Keough to take spots one and three on the podium.

Pleased with the results, General Manager and Team Director, Mike Tamayo, stated, “Charlotte is stage one of an important weekend of back-to-back racing in the US for us. The guys will leave Charlotte and fly straight to Battenkill where they will race shortly after landing in upstate New York.”

Tamayo continued, “I’ve been a director with this group for many years and I’ve seen them put together a great lead out, but tonight I wasn’t so sure about the distance from where they took over the front. I thought it may have been too far from the finish, but they showed me and everyone else just how strong they are and pulled off an amazing ride and a great win.”
“These guys are just so unselfish. Jake, Adrian, Jay and Karl were all selfless in devoting the entire race to make sure they could sprint for Hilton. Menzies really does the job of 10 men (hence the nickname, 10 Menzies). Jake won this race last year and selflessly focused on helping Hilton win it this year – and he still landed on the podium. It is great to have such incredible talent working together to race and win for one another,” Tamayo concluded.

The Presbyterian Hospital Invitational Criterium is part of USA Cycling’s National Criterium Calendar (NCC) as well as USA CRITS national series, and boasts one of the most lucrative prize purses. This year’s edition saw the elite men roar through the streets of downtown Charlotte’s 1.3 mile closed barbell shaped course at a lightning fast pace, amidst the backdrop of a crowd that was nothing short of electric. The race is the chief fundraising event for the Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas, and has raised nearly $5 million for charity over the years.

Yak-Attack Stage Race
March 3-14, 2012
Nepal

Now in its 6th year, the Yak-Attack, was recently named one of the 5 hardest races in the World by Mountain Bike UK magazine. Held on the Annapurna trekking trail in Nepal, the Yak-Attack takes racers from 4,000 ft to nearly 18,000 ft in 10 days of racing. For 2012, Topeak-Ergon sent Sonya Looney and Jeff Kerkove to take on the massive mountains of Nepal.

Sonya Looney would get off to a charging start by winning the first stage out of Kathmandu. For the remainder of the event, she would battle a small, but strong women’s field. Sonya would go on to win each stage as well as the overall Yak-Attack title for the women. “The Yak Attack was an epic journey of body and soul with a challenging course that not only tested how fast you can ride, but with a huge element of how strong you are at hiking some of the most heinous terrain while carrying your bike. Not only does the race demand a strong mind and body during the stages, but also for the time you're off the bike. I am honored to be the first woman to ever complete the 10 day Yak Attack!” stated Sonya post-race.

Jeff Kerkove would have a great first half of the event taking podium spots in the early stages. Later in the event Jeff would come down with a 102F fever and flu-like symptoms and be forced from the event by the race doctors with ‘walking pneumonia’. After the race, Jeff had this to say, “I had an amazing experience chasing the strong Nepali riders over the insane Nepal terrain. Getting sick is never in the plan and I tried to push through, but when the doctor starts mentioning the word ‘death’ if I continue, I knew I had to listen to them. I plan to go back!”

Overall, the nearly 3 weeks in Nepal was a great experience on and off the bike for both riders.

World Cup victory for Nino Schurter

Nino repeats his world cup victory in Petermaritzburg

While Nino celebrates a sweet victory over Burry Stander and Manuel Fumic at the South African world cup, his team mate Florian Vogel is taken out of the race by a mechanical. Thats how close heaven and hell can be in sports!

Right from the start Schurter showed his ambitions by setting a pace that only few could follow. Even last years dominating Kulhavy was struggeling. Absalon never made it to the top lead group and also Hermida dropped back after some time. Only local star Burry Stander and Manuel Fumic where strong enough to stay at the front with Nino. They worked well together until Fumic had to let go too. After that it was the same battle as last weekend on the same course. Nino choose excact the same strategie, trying to put Burry in the defense on the descents. This formula also helped Nino to get ahead of Julien Absalon a year ago. And it still works. In the most difficult section called the "rockgarden" Nino droped Burry a bit more than a lap to go. After that it was a clean ride to the finish.

"It's awesome to start the season like this. It builds confidence towards my main goal of the season and this are the Olympic Games."

Far away from beeing excited was our secnd ass in the team. Unfortunately Florian Vogel got only 3/4 of first lap until he ripped his tubular off the rim riding trough a compresssion. This pulled him out of the race. Not only was he posioned well and feeling strong, this race was also the first of four selection races for Olympics. He will have to dig deep at the next world cup stop in Houffalize starting out of 61st position. "This is hard to except. Mechanicals happen once in a while, but this one came about in the worst moment. I hope I can deliver the answer to this dilemma in Belgium in a month from now.

A good performance was seen by our U23 rider Roger Walder. He finished in the seperate U23 world cup as the best Swiss rider in 16th place. Considering he had to start in his first U23 world cup all the way in the back this was a good show.

Nino Schurter (Scott-Swisspower) and Cecile Ravanel (GT-Skoda Chamonix) take their respective top setp at Pietermaritzburg.

Ritchey is a proud sponsor of both Nino Schurter and Cecile Rayanel's teams and excited for what's shaping up to be a great year for both teams!

One week before the continuation of the World Cup, Cecile wins on the Pietermaritzburg track. Cedric finished 11th in the elite. The team is ready ...

She won a second victory in a week. Adrian Pastor, team manager, commented: "It is useless to ignite but we will not shun our pleasure. The group is well, it stores the confidence and I hope it will continue as long as possible. Cecile feels good on this very technical circuit. It’s really fun and it pays. " Besides the victory of Cecile ahead Last, we note the great recovery of Lene Byberg (8th).

Among boys, Nino Schurter was fastest in the "rock garden" South African. The case was badly board for Cedric, involved in a crash after a few hundred meters, "I have counted over the 30th place in the first lap. In the end, he finished in 11th place at thirty seconds of the top ten, it shows that it is on track ... "says Pastor. Now, up to a little rest before the big fight scheduled for Saturday.

"Tirreno - Adriatico": Rodriguez triumphed in stage 6

Great performance for Joaquim Rodriguez in "Tirreno - Adriatico" last but one stage: 'Purito' was able to obtain his first victory in this 2012, thanks to a brilliant attack in the last kilometre before the finishing line. The stage was characterized, in his second part by a 16,2 kilometres long circuit in Offida that the group had to run six times: quite a demanding course, with no plain parts. The daily breakaway, an early 7-man escape, was able to reach a highest gap over the group of 5'. The ahead riders were able to resist the group's chase until Katusha Team imposed his pace, with 15 kilometres to go. The main group neutralized the breakaway with 6 kilometres to the finishing line: then the lock step group started to lose some elements, due to several attacks. But the crucial blitz was made by Rodriguez: Katusha Team's Spanish rider took advantage of the huge work of his teammates and anticipated his rush with 1 kilometre to go. The other rider answered to his progression too late: 'Purito' resisted and took a solo win, defeating Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Cannondale) and Danilo Di Luca (Acqua&Sapone), respectevely second and third. In general classification, the Katusha Team's leader is 7th, 50'' far from the first place; Chris Horner holds the leadership before tomorrow's last stage, a 9,3-kilometre long ITT in San Benedetto del Tronto. Moreover, Katusha is still 1st in the special Team's Ranking: the second team is AG2R, 11'' far.

"I'm very happy with today's victory - said Rodriguez - in the last two stages I was a little disappointed: they were good courses for me but I couldn't win, also because my rivals were in a better shape. Instead, today in theory it was a better stage for Oscar Freire, more suitable to his characteristics, but when I saw he was not ahead I tried to win. My only chance was to anticipate my rush and attack from far, because in the bunch there was Peter Sagan and I couldn't compete with him in a sprint. It was an important victory: now I'm more persuaded the work we did from Tour of Oman to Tirreno-Adriatico was good, I proved I'm getting better and better and for Vuelta al Pais Vasco I'll be ready for taking some other good results. I won't go to Milan-Sanremo, but I'm sure we can do a great race: Freire is in a great shape, so I think he has many chances to win his fourth Spring Classic".

"Everything went right today - said the Sport Director Valerio Piva - we had different strategies, depending on how the race could develop: we could work for Freire if the competition was going to be solved by a massive bunch sprint, or instead for 'Purito'. The team worked very well: especially Horrach and Paolini, in the last part of the course, did a great job, imposing our pace to the group. Tomorrow there will be the ITT ending: Rodriguez is very motivated and he will try to get a good result even if it's not his speciality. We'll try to take Vladimir Gusev on the top-ten too: he's 14th, 35'' far from the tenth position. It won't be easy, but he's a good rider in races against the clock, so I think he can do it. It could mean to save also our leadership in Team's Ranking: we'll try to win this special classification".
